Firstly, we would like to recommend our "sister museum" to you. The HöhlenErlebnisZentrum (Cave Experience Centre) in Bad Grund (45 minutes away) was brought to life by the same people as the Cistercian Museum in 2008 and in addition to the  Iberg Dripstone Cave also offers a modern museum with a permanent exhibition about the sensational finds of the world's "oldest" family clan from the Bronze Age. 

A World Heritage Information Centre will soon open in Walkenried, and thereby the southern entry point for the UNESCO World Heritage in the Harz. Whether with helmet or backpack, above or below ground you can explore the World Heritage in the Harz over an area of 220 square kilometres in eleven museums and a long list of individual locations.

Want to visit more monasteries? Walkenried Monastery is part of the HarzerKlosterSommer (Harz Monastery Summer) group, in which six Harz monasteries have got together in order to get you to take these special places to heart.

Hiking near and far

With more than 233 km of routes, the Karstwanderweg (karst hiking trail) connects a unique, natural gypsum karst landscape in the districts of Mansfeld-Südharz (Saxony-Anhalt), Nordhausen (Thuringia) and Göttingen (Lower Saxony) and goes directly through Walkenried.

If you want to cross the Harz from west to east, the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg (Harz Witches' Trail) offers a continuously marked trail of 97 km between Osterode am Harz and Thale.
